Jeff and Dominic: I think, from the fantasy perspective of the player, we hope that anyone who plays the game will feel like an artist. SamaGame: And what do you want the player to feel when playing Concrete Genie? What is your ultimate goal? See glimpses from almost every location but there are some that you will have to find out by playing the game. Jeff and Dominic: There are other sections of the city. SamaGame: Can we leave Denska or see new sections of the city at any time? In general, we think of it as a third-person action-adventure game with platforming, parkour, and that’s probably the easiest way to describe the game but you have these mechanics like the paintings, making the genies, walking with them and solving puzzles with them as a way to change that formula a little bit. SamaGame: And how would you describe Concrete Genie? Is it more of a game of exploration, puzzles, combat, stealth or a mix of them all? And we want this to be the message of the game – it is not violent and when you start to learn more about the past of the Rufias and what they went through, you start to understand them better. Jeff and Dominic: Ash, at the beginning of the game, is very powerless and frustrated and throughout the levels and history you start to know more about the ruffians’ past and what that does to Ash, as a character, is to evoke sympathy, empathy and understanding. SamaGame: Looking at the Ruffias in the game now, will Ash ever defend himself against them? Maybe fight them? It’s a good example of how technology and creativity collide and we make sure you can paint the genies as flexibly as possible and then animate, move and interact with them and with Ash – make it happen work regardless of how the pints require a lot of procedural techniques and animations. Jeff and Dominic: You are absolutely right. SamaGame: It must have been quite difficult to put together the concept to create such a wide variety of genies! We use the appendices to change your silhouette in a surprising way – which is a lot of fun – and how the spots affect your personality. I’m trying to think how many we can have at a specific time – I think it’s somewhere between 17-18 but there are more throughout the game and then, when you’re done, there’s a continuation mode where you can go back and find additional places to paint extra genies and also find missing pages – so you’ll have the opportunity to paint a lot. So when you play the levels, all genies are blocked from those hidden paintings and we have to find them. Jeff and Dominic: That is a good question. SamaGame: Speaking of the genies – who are absolutely adorable – how many can we create? Can we create infinite genies in Concrete Genie? We found this concept so fabulous that we hired them at the moment and put together a team around them to work on it and have been doing it for the past few years. At that point, we showed the game to some of our friends we worked with, Jeff Brown and Dave Smith (Jeff was particularly working with VR for a while) and they looked at the game and had this fantastic idea of what they would do if they had the opportunity to create a VR version of Concrete Genie that consisted of ? and if we could paint on a wall, enter that painting and the world of Genies and paint in 3D around us ?. Jeff and Dominic: We knew from the beginning that it worked perfectly in VR as a first person painting experience, but as our team is very small and even three years ago there were only 10 or 11 of us. Was it difficult to put Concrete Genie on the VR platform? It was a challenge? Did both fit perfectly? SamaGame: This is also your first time to work for VR. Jeff and Dominic: We are full of work to finish Concrete Genie on PS4 and PS4 Pro right now, so we have nothing to say on this issue right now. Is there even a possibility that they are working or thinking about that possibility? SamaGame: With the next generation of consoles right at the door, I also ask you if Concrete Genie can make it to PS5. Jeff and Dominic: We have a Full 4K mode on PS4 Pro. SamaGame: Since Concrete Genie is exclusive to Playstation consoles, will there be any improvement on the Pro or will it be exactly the same experience on both consoles? In addition to experiencing the game and one of its VR modes, we also had the exclusive opportunity to interview two of the minds behind the game – more precisely, Jeff Sallangi and Dominic Robillard, the art director and creative director respectively. On April 18, 2019, SamaGame was able to participate in an event dedicated to Concrete Genie, the exclusive Playstation 4 game, at Sony’s Madrid offices.
